{"id":10,"date":"2023-12-03T11:33:57","date_gmt":"2023-12-03T16:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stoneycreekhistorical.ca\/?page_id=10"},"modified":"2024-04-30T20:46:23","modified_gmt":"2024-05-01T00:46:23","slug":"our-story","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/stoneycreekhistorical.ca\/our-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Events In Our Society\u2019s History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beginnings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Historical Society had its beginnings on February 14, 1908 when a group of influential citizens, many whose names you may recognize today, organized a local branch of the Wentworth Historical Society. Their goal was to gain ownership of Smith\u2019s Knoll and create a monument as a memorial to the soldiers killed in the Battle of Stoney Creek, June 6, 1813 (a joint project with the Army and Navy Veterans\u2019 Association).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At Work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Later this group joined forces with the Women\u2019s Wentworth Historical Society to erect a monument commemorating 100 years of peace between Canada and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith\u2019s Knoll monument was completed and Battlefield monument had its gala opening on June 6, 1913.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Historical Society continued to plan an annual commemoration of the battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Struggles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>November 7, 1930 \u2013 The name of the local branch of the Wentworth Historical Society changed to the Stoney Creek Historical Society, with membership often very high in number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May 6, 1948 \u2013 With only four members remaining, the Society was disbanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mid 80\u2019s, the Burton Corman Home, one of Stoney Creek\u2019s older homes, was demolished.
